THE MIQUE CHIPROVTSI CARPET WEAVINGs

One of the undisputed phenomena, with which Bulgaria surprises the world – the multi – colored , fantastic ornaments and figures , as well as the impressive materials and fabrics from which the Chiprovsi carpets are made, has attracted the attention of experts and connoisseurs , from all continents . The Chiprovtsi masters have for dozens of generations followed the ancient proto – Bulgarian traditions in carpet weaving from more than 1300 years ago. Besides the inherited technologies for the creation of fabrics and the fantastic images from the lands of the proto – Bulgarians and the Ancient East, they guard jealously the sacred ornaments figures and compositions, In them, our ancestors, have embedded a peculiar from of original writing and have coded messages and mantras, symbols and spells, pledges and vows, which impart the carpet with the attribute of bearer of spirit, health and happiness in the home of its owner.

Since that time the images and the color expressions of the carpets have been a sincere message of the old masters through time, i.e. to the following generations and in space – to the people from other parts of the world. Unfortunately, today only experts can read the precious symbols, messages and signs, which, gathered in the different carpets, from astonishing messages and legends aimed at eternity.

The characteristic Chiprovtsi School in carpet weaving dates as early as 1750, during which initial period the triangular figures are dominant and the four main colors – brick- colored, red, ochre, green and blue . Since then, more sophisticated technical means have been found and the weaving technology has been perfected.
During the period of Renaissance, together with the major construction of original, multi –colored houses, more and more complex figures and ornaments, tints and shades are being introduced in Chiprovtsi carpet weaving , the use of aniline , and chemical dyeing started .

Carpet weaving has been the main occupation of the people from Chiprovtsi for more than 250 years and the Chiprovtsi School has turned into a unique phenomenon, a benchmark of Bulgarian applied arts. During those distant times the first woven carpets were used not only by Bulgarians, but also by the Turkish army for prayer Later on, the beautiful Chiprovtsi carpets have been exceptionally well received by connoisseurs of value and exquisiteness in France, United Kingdom, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Austria, USA and other countries.

One of the most typical ornaments in the Chiprovtsi carpets – “The Kanatitsa” ( a stylized figure of a butterfly ) , a symbol of eternity from ancient times , has reached as far as the American Indians over the centuries . It has been portrayed in a variety of fabrics with them – carpets, clothes, mantles (poncho) etc.
Ornaments, figures and sign compositions from the proto – Bulgarian and Chiprovtsi carpet weaving schools can be found as a cross reference and correspondence in the images of tapestries, textiles and clothes in castles and fortresses, as well in ancient and modern European museums and cribs.
